Audio Response for Moodle
What is Audio Response?
Audio Response is a Moodle question type designed for speaking activities, oral assessments, and language proficiency tests. It enables teachers to assess students’ spoken language by asking them to record their answers directly in Moodle.
The plugin is particularly suitable for language courses and standardized-test-style speaking exercises, where students must respond to a question or prompt within a specified time limit. Instead of submitting a written answer, students provide an audio recording of their spoken response.
Audio Response integrates with Moodle’s standard question bank and quiz system. Teachers can create questions, configure recording times, assign marks, and manually assess students’ answers. The plugin supports audio responses only; it does not record video.
How Does Audio Response Work?
1. Creating a Question
The teacher creates an Audio Response question in Moodle’s question bank and enters the question text or speaking prompt. The teacher can configure the following settings:
- Delay before recording: An optional waiting period before the preparation stage begins.
- Preparation countdown: An optional period during which students can prepare their answers before recording starts.
- Recording duration: The maximum time available for the spoken response. The default is 60 seconds, and the duration can be configured from 10 seconds to 10 minutes.
- Default mark: The number of marks assigned to the question by default.
These settings allow teachers to adapt the question to different speaking activities, from short responses to longer oral presentations.
2. Recording an Answer
When a student opens a quiz containing an Audio Response question, the recording sequence proceeds automatically.
First, any configured delay and preparation countdown are observed. A short audio signal then indicates that recording is about to begin. After one second, the browser starts recording through the student’s microphone.
The student speaks in response to the question until the configured recording time expires. Recording then stops automatically, and the audio file is uploaded to Moodle.
To simulate controlled speaking-test conditions, the plugin does not provide controls for pausing, playing back, or re-recording the answer. Students cannot choose when recording starts or make additional takes within the question.
3. Storing the Audio Response
The recorded audio is uploaded and stored as part of the student’s Moodle question attempt. The plugin uses Moodle’s standard question-response file-handling mechanisms rather than maintaining a separate database table for audio responses.
This integration allows the audio response to be managed within Moodle’s existing question and quiz infrastructure.
4. Assessing Students’ Answers
Audio Response is designed for manual assessment. After students complete their attempts, teachers can access their recorded answers through Moodle’s question-grading workflow.
Teachers listen to each recording and assess the student’s performance according to their own criteria. Depending on the learning objectives, these criteria might include pronunciation, fluency, vocabulary, grammar, comprehension, and the relevance of the response.
Teachers can then award marks for the answers. This makes Audio Response suitable for both formative speaking exercises and more formal oral assessments.
Typical Uses
Audio Response can be used in a variety of educational contexts, including:
- Language learning: Assessing students’ ability to speak a foreign language.
- Pronunciation practice: Evaluating the pronunciation and intelligibility of spoken responses.
- Speaking examinations: Creating timed speaking questions similar to those found in standardized language proficiency tests.
- Oral comprehension and response: Asking students to listen to or read a prompt and respond verbally.
- Timed speaking exercises: Encouraging students to organize their thoughts and deliver a response within a fixed period.
- Oral proficiency assessment: Evaluating students’ fluency, vocabulary, grammar, and overall speaking ability.
Technical Requirements
Audio Response uses the browser’s microphone-access and audio-recording capabilities. Recording requires a modern browser that supports the MediaRecorder and getUserMedia APIs.
The Moodle site must be accessed through a secure connection (HTTPS), except when running on localhost for development. Students must also grant the browser permission to access their microphones.
The plugin is designed to work with Moodle’s standard question-type functionality and is translation-ready. The repository documents testing with Moodle versions 4.1 through 5.2; compatibility with later versions has not yet been confirmed.
Summary
Audio Response brings timed audio recording directly into Moodle’s question and quiz system. Teachers create speaking questions, define preparation and recording times, and manually assess the resulting recordings. Students respond using their microphones, and their answers are automatically recorded, stopped at the configured time limit, and submitted to Moodle.
By combining controlled recording conditions with Moodle’s existing question bank, quiz, and grading functionality, Audio Response provides a practical solution for assessing spoken language without requiring a separate recording platform.
